The app is not out yet

Zebugs is being built and is not in the Google Play Store yet. This page is here already so that who stands behind it, and what the app does with your data, can be checked.

What we collect

Zebugs collects no personal data of its own accord. Your scan history stays on your own phone and we never see it. Your phone does include it in its own backup, at Google or Apple, just as it does for any other app; that backup sits in your account, not in ours. Only what you send us yourself reaches us: photos of a product, an ingredient list you scanned, a feedback message, or your answer to the question whether our verdict was right.

Camera

The camera is used only to read barcodes and ingredient lists. Images are not stored or transmitted, except when you choose to contribute photos of a product.

Contributions

When you upload photos of a product, we store them so the product can be added to the database. One thing we also send without photos: if a product has a name but no ingredient list, and you scan that list yourself, we keep that text with the barcode so the next person does not have to do it again. The screen says so at the time. No account details or location are sent. A random number created when the app was installed does travel with it, so that one device cannot fill the queue on its own. That number says nothing about who you are, and clearing the app’s data creates a new one. Nothing becomes visible to others before we have reviewed it. If the upload screen says the photos also go to Open Food Facts, they are public there under the CC BY-SA licence, with Zebugs as the sender and nothing about you.

Feedback

If you send feedback through the app, we store your message together with the app version and your platform (iOS or Android). Your email address is optional: leave it out and your message is anonymous and we cannot reply.

Third parties

We do not sell data and we show no advertising. On every scan the barcode goes to Open Food Facts, an open database, to look the product up; nothing else about you goes with it. There is nothing to pay for in Zebugs at the moment. If Zebugs Pro arrives, it is billed through the App Store or Google Play and not through us; we never see card details.

Your rights

You can clear your local data at any time via Profile → Clear scan history. A copy already in your phone’s backup does not go with it; you manage that in your Google or Apple backup settings. Questions and comments can also go through Settings → Send feedback.

Terms of use

What Zebugs does

Zebugs provides information about ingredients made from insects, wherever in the world you scan. Carmine and shellac are used in food worldwide. It is a tool, not medical or legal advice.

Accuracy

Recipes change. If you have an allergy or follow a strict diet, always check the label yourself. We do our best, but we cannot guarantee completeness.

Contributions

Photos you upload may be used by Zebugs to improve the database. Only upload photos you took yourself.

Subscriptions

Zebugs Pro is billed through the App Store or Google Play and renews automatically until you cancel. Cancel in your app store account settings.

Liability

Zebugs is not liable for damages arising from use of the app, to the extent permitted by law.

Zebugs Pro does not exist yet and is not for sale anywhere. The paragraph on subscriptions describes how it will work once it does.

Contact and business details
